Black Codes
The Black Codes were made in southern states that had formerly been part of the Confederacy during the Civil War. They were made immediately after the war ended and after slavery was abolished in the United States. The goal of the Black Codes were to keep white supremacy and to maintain control over African Americans and restrict their rights. They stated what a free African American was allowed to do, and their rights as stated in the Black Codes were very limited. These Black Codes did not help African American integration into America's society; in fact, it was a negative impact on the effort for them to become equal to white men because it restricted many rights from them that they deserved since they were free, and these codes ensured that they would not be treated as equals to white people.
